On this day in 1263, Mindaugas, the first known Grand Duke of Lithuania and the only King of Lithuania, died. He agreed to baptism in return for an acknowledgement of his kingship, but later appeared to revert to paganism, making sacrifices to the old gods, burning corpses instead of burying them, and conducting pagan rites in public. Later historians agree his conversion was strictly strategic in nature.
On this day in 1902, Margaret Hamilton, the actress who portrayed the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1939 film of The Wizard of Oz, was born.
