October 9 2018 Pagan Style

Today, ancient Greeks and modern Hellenists celebrate the Agathos Daimon. Agathos Daimon means “good spirit” and is a religious observance held on the second day of each lunar month, immediately following the Noumenia. It is the third celebration of a trio of household monthly observances. A good spirit usually refers to a type of divine being that is less powerful than a God, is personal to each family, and can bring the family good luck, protection, or some type of assistance. Household spirits are usually seen as either snakes or as a young man with a horn of plenty in hand. The name “daimon” does not mean the evil demon of modern Christianity, (although it did have a negative form, called the kakodaimon), but was thought to be an aspect of Zeus, as Zeus Ktesios, Charitodotes, and Epikarpios, titles as giver of increase and joy. Agathos Daimon is most often represented in the form of a snake, a symbol of healing. However the daimon is also a function of one’s being, a characteristic inherently neither good nor bad. Hence, one prays for a good daimon, an eudaimon, and goodness from the gods for the coming month and also for the favor of father Zeus as Agathos Daimon. Burkert (Greek Religion, p. 181) says that “One must be on good terms with it.” And Pindar sang that "The daimon active about me I will always consciously put to rights with me by cultivating him according to my means" (Pyth. 3.108f) and "The great mind of Zeus steers the daimon of the men whom he loves" (Pyth. 5.122f). The philosopher Sokratēs talks of his own daimon as a small voice which speaks to him and warns him to refrain from certain actions (Plato, Apology, 31d).Heathens celebrate a Day of Remembrance for Leif Eriksson today. He was an explorer and adventurer credited with the discovery of Vinland.

Hindus everywhere celebrate Navratri (literally "nine nights"), also spelled Navaratri or Navarathri, starting today. This festival is a multi-day Hindu festival celebrated in the autumn every year. It is observed for different reasons and celebrated differently in various parts of the Indian subcontinent. Theoretically, there are four seasonal Navratri. However, in practice, it is the post-monsoon autumn festival called Sharad Navratri that is the most observed in the honour of the divine feminine Devi (Durga). The festival is celebrated in the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashvin.
Ghatasthapana is one of the most significant rituals performed during Navratri. It marks the beginning of the nine days festivity. The Hindu scriptures have well defined rules and guidelines to perform Ghatasthapana during a certain period of time at the beginning of Navratri. Ghatasthapana is the invocation of the Goddess Shakti and doing it at the wrong time might bring out the wrath of the Goddess Shakti. Ghatasthapana is prohibited during Amavasya and night time.

Today begins the Feast of Divine Wisdom, the Source of all knowledge, honouring the God-Goddess as Odin-Frigg (Norse); and Goddess as Sophia/Wisdom (Christian/Gnostic), Truth/Maat (Egyptian), Metis (Greek), Sarasvati (Hindu), and Manat (Arabic-Sufi). It ends on October 11.

Ancient Egyptians and modern Kemetics celebrate today as the day Ra judges the dispute of Set and Heru (Horus).

The Autumn Festival is held today at the Shimogamo Shrine, Kyoto, Japan. Traditional music and entertainment is performed as people pray for a good harvest.

On this day in 1586, Anna Dormar, Agatha Weiss and Christina Mayer were burned at the stake in Waldsee, Germany, for witchcraft. In 1685, Rebecca Fowler was convicted of witchcraft and hung in Calvert County, Maryland. Be at Peace, Sisters!

Reginald Scot, author of The Discoverie of Witchcraft, died this day in 1599. The book is often deemed the first textbook about conjuring, although the book was really written to show witches did not exist.

If You Were Born Today, October 9:

You are a study in contradictions. Although compassionate, humanitarian, and egalitarian at least in theory, you can also be domineering when the mood strikes you. Your moods and behavior swings can be frustrating for others (and for yourself!) at times, but they also help fuel your powerful creativity. You love to debate and you have a way with words. You are not tolerant of narrow-minded thinking. You possess considerable strength of character, and partnership is extremely important to you. You live by your own truth and you are responsible. Famous people born today: John Lennon, Sean Lennon, John Entwistle.
